English Language Arts Skills

Each child will:

  • become an independent reader.
  • comprehend information read.
  • apply reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing skills.
  • develop an appreciation and enjoyment of literature.
  • apply spelling skills throughout the curriculum.

  • write and compare fractions.
  • use a calculator.
  • apply standard/metric measurement skills.
  • understand basic concepts of geometry.

  • read and comprehend charts, maps, graphs, etc.

  • read and create a time line.
  • use research skills to create projects based on social studies themes.
  • be exposed to various cultures of the United States.
  • become familiar with the government, economy and citizenship.


Suggestions to help your child at home:

  • Discuss your child's day at school. Ask specifically what he/she learned at school today.
  • Set a specific time each day for homework/study. (This may be practicing vocabulary words, rereading the story text, or using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division flash cards.)
  • Have your child read independently 30 minutes a day.
  • Limit amount of TV/computer game time.
  • Use calendars to discuss and mark important events.
  • Make a "to do" list and have your child check off items as he/she completes them.
  • Hold high expectations. Children usually live up to your expectations.
  • Instill responsibility in your child by encouraging him/her to show you daily papers, complete homework, and to return required forms to school.
